    Sue Johnson, PhD, RN, NPD-BC, NE-BC, FAAN

    Sue Johnson is Principal of RN Innovations LLC, an education management company in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She has over 25 years’ experience in nursing professional development, has served as a member of the ANPD Board of Directors, authored seven books on healthcare and leadership, and is currently a team co-leader within the Commission for Nurse Reimbursement.

    Kimberly Gordon, DNP, CRNA

    Kimberly Gordon is a reformed accountant having earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from John Carroll University in Ohio. After working seven years in various cost accounting and managerial positions, she chose to pursue a career in nursing and then nurse anesthesia. Kimberly graduated with a Bachelor and Master of Science in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She earned her Doctor of Nursing practice at Yale University where she and a colleague developed the first-of-its-kind Campaign School for Nurses and Midwives.

    Kimberly is the co-founder of Healing Politics, a non-profit organization on a mission to inspire, motivate, recruit, and train nurses and midwives to run for elected office while building a culture of civic engagement within the professions. She practices anesthesia per diem for Novant Health in Winston-Salem and is the first CRNA to serve as the North Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthetists’ (NCANA) Government Relations Director. Kimberly has always been involved in the nursing profession. First, in the NC Nurses Association (NCNA), then NCANA. She is the Legislative Chair for the NC Organization of Nurse Leaders (NCONL) and serves on the board of Healthcare Providers for Greater Access. She loves talking about nursing leadership, professionalism, and political involvement with anyone who will listen. Kimberly wishes that every nurse understood the powerful impact that they have on their communities, colleagues, and the healthcare system. She believes that nurses working together could, quite literally, change the world.       

    Debi Sampsel, DNP, MSN, RN

    Debi Sampsel, DNP, RN serves as the Dayton VA Medical Center Director of High Reliable Organization and Evidence-based Practice. She is also the co-director of the two granted funded programs: A Women’s Health Musculoskeletal (MSK) provider training program and the “Active Duty and Veterans Holistic Musculoskeletal Management and Enhancement initiative, which incorporates telehealth, health coach coordination, and a rehabilitation online fitness program. 

    Before joining the VA, Dr. Sampsel held various health care executive positions in medical facilities, health care system offices, academia. She also served as Senior Associate of integrated health networks at a leading national healthcare organization. Dr. Sampsel is known for her visionary & collaborative leadership style, innovation with technology, and cutting-edge research. Recently, Debi and fellow inventors were issued a US provisional patent for an in-home telehealth medical delivery drone. In 2013, Debi and a colleague, were awarded a United States Patent Trademark Office patent for the development of an in-home telehealth system. 

    Her focus on using telehealth to extend the reach of the workforce, address the needs of persons with impairments and reduce socioeconomical barriers has accumulated into numerous research studies, the creation of two Innovative Interdisciplinary Smart Houses, an Innovation Collaboratory, several publications, and recognitions. Most recently, she received the University of Toledo, College of Nursing, Alumni of the Year award.

    Dr. Sampsel’s Doctor of Nursing Practice degree was awarded at Union University in Jackson, TN.  She received her Master of Science in Nursing from the Medical College of Ohio, her Bachelor of Arts, and Associate Degree in Nursing from the University of Toledo. 


    Manish Kumar, PhD

    Manish Kumar received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in 1998, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University, NC, USA in 2002 and 2004 respectively. After finishing his Ph.D., he served as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Duke University, the US Army Research Office, and General Robotics, Automation, Sensing, and Perception (GRASP) laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania, PA, USA. He started his career as a faculty member at University of Cincinnati (UC) in 2007 in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering where he currently serves as a Professor and the Graduate Program Director. He established Industry 4.0/5.0 Institute which is consortium of industry members engaged in researching and developing advanced technologies for solving key challenges facing the industry. He currently directs Cooperative Distributed Systems (CDS) Laboratory, co-directs Industry 4.0/5.0 Institute, and co-directs UAV MASTER Lab. His research interests include Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, robotics, decision-making and control in complex systems, AI, multi-sensor data fusion, swarm systems, and multiple robot coordination and control. His research has been supported by funding obtained from National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Ohio Department of Transportation, Ohio Department of Higher Education, and several industrial partners. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has served as the Chair of the Robotics Technical Committee of the ASME’s Dynamic Systems and Control Division, and as Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurements and Control and ASME Journal of Autonomous Vehicles and Systems.


    Luke Busse, PhD, BS | Graduate Student

    Luke Busse received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Management from Bluefield State University in 2022. Currently, he is graduate student of the direct-track PhD program in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Cincinnati working under Dr. Manish Kumar. His research interests include Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles, Autonomous Navigation, Machine Learning, Robotics and Control, and sensor-fusion. He contributed to the development of the Human Digital Twin as part of the UC 4.0/5.0 Institute which resulted in a provisional patent on a method for predicting human motion. Additionally, he worked on the software and hardware design of the Care Delivery Telehealth Drone.



    Policy Symposium Panel Speakers

    Melissa Cole, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC, CENP

    Dr. Melissa D. Cole is the inaugural Dean of the College of Health at John Carroll University (JCU), where she also serves as Associate Faculty in the Nursing Department. She oversees the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and the expansion of JCU’s health care academic offerings. Previously, Dr. Cole held several leadership positions at University Hospitals Health System, including Vice President for the Center for Emergency Medicine and Integrated Delivery Operations. She holds degrees from Ursuline College, the University of Tampa, and Case Western Reserve University and has over 20 years of experience in emergency medicine and healthcare leadership.

    Dr. Cole is a recognized leader in clinical innovation and healthcare operations, having contributed to advancements in remote patient monitoring and hospital-at-home models. She is also an active community advocate, serving on the boards of local mental health and addiction recovery centers. Her work continues to break down barriers for women in leadership and address mental health stigmas.


    Cleopatra Kum, PhD, RN

    Cleopatra E. Kum is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. Her research interest is in stroke family caregiver health, with an emphasis on designing and testing cardiovascular health promotion interventions in stroke family caregivers. Her prior work focused on understanding the theoretically based factors associated with stroke family caregiver health. She is also a nurse entrepreneur, founder of Family Support Care LLC. Family Support Care is a Medicare-accredited home healthcare agency that was started in 2016. Family Support Care specializes in providing high quality home healthcare services to seniors and people with disabilities in the Southwestern Ohio region. Since inception, this agency has grown significantly, and is now contracted with major insurance players like the Ohio Department of Aging, the Ohio Department of Medicaid, Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, Aetna, Molina, Buckeye amongst others.

    Dr. Kum has had the privilege of being recognized as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholar, NHLBI PRIDE CVD scholar, Gerontological Society of America Diversity Workshop Training assistance Scholar and an alumnus of the Goldman Sachs 10000 Small Business Program. She has a passion for people, teaching, the nursing profession, and our healthcare system. She loves working with patients and their caregivers, to improve health outcomes by providing comprehensive and relevant health education. She is particularly interested in older adults and their caregivers, especially those with cardiovascular diseases and stroke. She has had the opportunity to present her work at conferences at regional, national, and international levels, and she is currently disseminating her work through peer-reviewed publications. At the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing, she serves as an Assistant Professor, conducting collaborative research in family caregiving. She also served as a nurse intervener on a large NIH-funded project, seeking to improve the health and well-being of family caregivers of stroke survivors. She dreams of a world where patients, caregivers, and their communities are encouraged to find their voices and take charge of their own health.


    Lindsay McGuiness, MSN, BSN, RN

    Lindsay McGuiness embodies the spirit of innovation and excellence in healthcare. With over 13 years of experience in traditional hospital settings, Lindsay transitioned to DispatchHealth in 2019 as a founding member of its Advanced Care team. She played a pivotal role in designing and implementing a model that delivers hospital-level care directly in patients' homes.

    Under Lindsay's leadership, DispatchHealth has provided care to over 2,500 patients in this novel model, including community-acquired patients as well as those under the Acute Hospital Care at Home waiver program. She has been instrumental in launching Advanced Care services in 14 markets, achieving consistent year-over-year growth in both volume and revenue. Notably, her team's efforts have resulted in a 30-day readmission rate of less than 8.5% and an impressive average Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 98%.

    In her role as Managing Director of Clinical Operations, Lindsay continues to push the boundaries of healthcare innovation. She excels in building and sustaining high-functioning interdisciplinary teams, always with a patient-centered focus. Her leadership ensures that the collective efforts of the team translate into exceptional patient care.

    Outside of her professional life, Lindsay is a dedicated mom, often found cheering on her three children at various youth sports events. She brings the same enthusiasm and dedication to her personal life as she does to her groundbreaking work in healthcare.
